On the evening of May 18 local time, the Yugoslav Drama Theatre in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, was filled with prolonged applause as Our Jing Ke performed by the Beijing People’s Art Theatre concluded successfully.
In recent years, the Beijing People’s Art Theatre has deepened exchange and cooperation with its Serbian counterparts. In 2015 and 2017, the Yugoslav Drama Theatre and the National Theatre in Belgrade were invited to perform The Imaginary Invalid and The Lady of the Camellias respectively at the Capital Theatre. This year, the Beijing People’s Art Theatre reciprocated the visit to Belgrade with Our Jing Ke, further promoting cultural exchange between the two cities.
“The aim is to show the local audience the artistic style, aesthetic ideas, and forms of expression in Chinese drama. Despite the language gap, the audience can still relate to the emotions conveyed, such as how to navigate fame and fortune, as well as how to pursue love and peace,” said Wang Ban, who played Jing Ke in the drama.
Beyond the theatre, the exchange continues. The Beijing People’s Art Theatre delegation donated books to the China Cultural Center in Belgrade and engaged in discussions on topics such as artistic development with relevant Serbian art institutions. “We hope to broaden communication channels and build bridges to promote cultural exchange between the two sides, so as to better tell the stories of Beijing and China”.
